What a busy day yesterday was for the Senior School. The day started with the annual St Colmcilles Pilgrimage to St Colmcille’s Well situated on the Ballycullen Road. Pupils that wish to go on this pilgrimage must be accompanied by their own parents or grandparents as the road leading up to the well can be quite dangerous in parts.
Parents who take part in this event meet at the school at 9.15 a.m. in the central Atrium where they view the artwork depicting the life Story of St Colmcille. Then then proceed to the school yard where they are joined by their son/daughter and the pilgrimage commences about 9.30a.m. It is approx 3K walk from the school. There is a Mass held at the well and then they all return back to the school where the P.A. have a cup tea for the adults.
As always this was a very well attended event and the rain held off which meant that the parents could enjoy their tea/coffee sitting outside the school halls while others got to view the amazing make and model exhibition in the school hall.
Then at 1.30 p.m. yesterday there was the much-anticipated relay races held on the green across from the school. The senior school was split into their houses GARTAN (Red) MOVILLE (Blue), DOIRE (Green), IONA (White), KELLS (Black) & TÍR CHONAILL (Yellow). You could feel the tension and buzz building as the runners split into their houses and discussed strategy at the starting line. Their supporters all in their house colours cheering loudly at the sidelines. Which house would be the winner
this year? All the houses put in tremendous effort and the race was very close but there can only be one winner and this year it was Gartan’s turn to claim the title. Gartan supporters went wild when their last runner crossed the finish line, well done everyone on a very exciting race.
After that there is the relay race students against the teachers. This is THE RACE of the day, the one that all students of course want to win. The senior school teachers are very competitive and always put up a good fight. But alas it was not their year. This year it was Iona’s turn to claim the victory. A great attempt by all participants and below who can see the race for yourself.
